Lineup announced for forthcoming Merge Records covers comp - 10.17.2008

Landmark indie labels across the nation are reaching landmark anniversaries of late. First there was Sub Pop, who just turned 20. And in January, Merge Records will be celebrating its 20th birthday as well. And along with that birthday celebration comes a whopping box set featuring a discography cover art book, a remix compilation and a covers compilation, with 14 other artist-curated compilations also to be included and sent to subscribers over the course of the year.

Among the curators of the compilations are R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, director Phil Morrison, Amy Poehler, David Byrne, Miranda July, Jonathan Lethem, artist Marcel Dzama, Momofuku chef David Chang, Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo, Zach Galifianakis, New Yorker critic/The Rest Is Noise author Alex Ross, Persepolis author Marjane Satrapi, and artists Andrea Zittel and Kara Walker.

Ah, but here's the most fun part. The covers compilation (again, just one of 14 comps!) includes a plethora of amazing artists contributing their own versions of songs from the Merge Records catalog. Check this out:

Ryan Adams, Apples In Stereo, Bright Eyes, Bill Callahan, Laura Cantrell, Death Cab for Cutie, Dirty Projectors, Calvin Johnson, Ted Leo, Les Savy Fav, Barbara Manning, Mountain Goats, The National, New Pornographers, Okkervil River, Quasi, Times New Viking, and Tracey Thorn & Jens Lekman.

Man, imagine hearing Les Savy Fav play Caribou's "Melody Day," Ryan Adams try Superchunk's "Slack Motherfucker," The National playing Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" or the New Pornographers do Lambchop's "Up with People." Just for the record, we don't actually know what songs they're playing just yet.

In any case, the pre-order price for subscribers of all the Merge 20th anniversary compilation volumes is $179 for those who sign up by Nov. 8 (then it goes up to $199 thereafter). The first volumes will be delivered in January.
