Pussy Riot members sentenced to two years in prison - 08.17.2012
All three members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot have been found guilty of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred," and sentenced to two years in prison. The case has been ongoing for the past five months and has attracted international attention, including from some outspoken supporters like Bjork and Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna.
The courtroom scene itself burst into shouts of "shame! shame!" after the verdict was read, and according to the Guardian, several people were arrested outside of the court, including former chess champion and political activist Gary Kasparov.
Pussy Riot were jailed in March after a performance at a church, during which the group shouted an "anti-Putin punk prayer." Amnesty International have declared the band "prisoners of conscience" and said the group is in danger of being subject to physical and sexual abuse in Russian labor camps.
