Destroyer announces new album, Poison Season
Dan Bejar, aka Destroyer, is preparing to release a new album. Following last year’s Five Spanish Songs EP, Bejar has announced Poison Season, which will be out via Merge Records on Aug. 28. The album features songs about four characters—Jesus, Jacob, Judy, Jack—and a press release references both musical theater and David Bowie’s Hunky Dory in describing the sound of it, as well as the sophisti-pop stylings of Aztec Camera and Prefab Sprout (kinda like Kaputt?).
“The first and last songs are actually one song tracked live with quintet,” Bejar says in a press release. “I even sang with the band. That song always swung between super austere and super mid-’70s Springsteen/Bowie street-rock. In the end, I decided I wanted both. Couldn’t really figure out a way to sequence the orchestral version within the record, so I decided to carve it up as a book-ending motif, with the rock version squarely in the middle.”
