Gentle Leader XIV revel in post-punk gloom on “Woman Walking”

On April 18, Ohio post-punk trio Gentle Leader XIV will release their sophomore album Joke In the Shadow (following 2018’s Channels) via Feel It Records, and after recently releasing the first single, “Fawning,” they’re serving up another taste of the new record in the form of “Woman Walking.” On this latest track, the group—comprising Jeffrey Tucholski (Running), Matt Hallaran (Glass Traps), and Maria Jenkins (Hollows)—pair the post-punk gloom of early New Order with the icy pulse of early industrial/synth-punk acts such as Cabaret Voltaire, along with some vintage 4AD dream pop bliss. The end result is something in the neighborhood of art-punk avant gardists Exploded View as well as their Buckeye State neighbors in The Serfs. It’s a great track, and another indication that Joke In the Shadow is shaping up to be a release that needs to be on your most-anticipated list.
