In a recent podcast interview, The Roots emcee Black Thought has announced he’s part of a new supergroup. As Brooklyn Vegan points out, Black Thought said on The Crate 808 Hip Hop Podcast that the new project is called Dopamine, and it also features Elvis Costello (with whom The Roots have collaborated before), DJ Premier, T-Bone Burnett, jazz artist Cassandra Wilson and roots rock artist Nathaniel Rateliff.

In describing how the group approaches the material, Black Thought describes it as “A really unusual sort of motley crew…it’s weird how the songs come to be. Essentially live instrumentation, Premier is right there and he sorta takes it and chops it up.” Black Thought also has a project in the works with Danger Mouse, and he also has a set of songs he’s recorded with DJ Premier that he intends to release as one of the installments of his Streams of Thought series. Earlier this year, he released Streams of Thought Vol. 3: Cane and Able.

The Roots are featured on our list of the Top 30 Bands of the Past 30 Years.
