Bottom Bracket reflect on fraying connections on “Spin Cycle”
It probably shouldn’t come as a surprise Illinois band Bottom Bracket have been working on new music since even before their debut album was released; sure, circumstances meant that any record released in the early pandemic days was dead on arrival, and that included their debut album, I Don’t Care Enough to Stay. However, the DIY scene on social media did its thing, and it had enough staying power that the Chicago trio built on it with 2022’s A Figure in Armor EP. All of this is to say that their new record I’m So Afraid of Where is a striking level-up, taking everything that came before and super-sizing it. “Spin Cycle” is a prime example of that, kicking off with flashy drum fills and an urgent backing that sounds like several car alarms going off at once. It’s a definite way to get your attention, and you’ll be hooked by the time the song properly kicks in.
It’s about the simmering resentment that comes from losing friendships, and life sometimes having different plans. Given that they’ve had this one in the chamber for more than four years, it’s fitting that the song’s meaning’s changed since then. Vocalist and guitarist Mario Cannamela says of the song: “[‘Spin Cycle’] is one of the older songs on the record but it’s one of our favorites. The song is about grappling with growing apart from someone you care about and the emotional whirlwind that comes with. It’s so uncomfortable for the both of us to beat around the bush and pretend we’re both happy; let’s just get the painful part over with.
“For the video, we leaned into some of the laundry metaphors in the lyrics, and the result turned out really goofy and fun. The video was filmed by Lars Juveland and Mike Rumchaks and they did such a good job with the way every single shot looks. We hope you enjoy!”
Treble is delighted to premiere the ‘Spin Cycle’ video below; I’m So Afraid of Where is out now via Count Your Lucky Stars.
