Reeseynem and Chance the Rapper’s “What’s the Hook” is a genuinely charming summer jam
You’re not gonna get to hear the words “Murphy Lee homage” too many times in 2018. Luckily, on “What’s the Hook,” Chicago spitters Reeseynem and Chance the Rapper have your back, resuscitating the St. Lunatic’s “Wat Da Hook Gon Be” to brilliant effect. Reeseynem’s verse is both astute and joyful, tackling institutionalized racism and expressing the joyousness of his own come-up with equal enthusiasm. Chance steals the show, though, as he’s wont to do. Chicagoist’s new owner slips and slides gloriously over the day-glo of J Gramm and Nate Fox’s production, detailing his workouts, shrieking like James Brown stepping on a Lego, and making a long, tortured fishing simile sound genuinely charming. These two have a late-summer-barbecue staple on their hands.
Out now.
