Avant garde metal band Sleepytime Gorilla Museum have announced a box set of their early material. The group have revealed the details of Triptych, a collection featuring their first three albums—Grand Opening and Closing (2001), Of Natural History (2004), and In Glorious Times (2007) on Gold swirl, Green swirl, and Oxblood swirl colored vinyl respectively—in an artfully crafted wooden box that unfolds into a three-part triptych (just like the title!). It’s out October 30 via Avant Night/Joyful Noise. It’s limited to 777 copies, and you can pre-order here.

The group released a statement about the box set:

This wooden box is a manifestation of what we have always loved the most about being alive: making strange and beautiful things with strange and beautiful humans. Some of our co-creators are new friends, and some we’ve been in cahoots with for decades:

Nick Ohler (founder of our label, Avant Night) has been an instigator and enabler of peculiar and passionate music his entire life. He is our Avant Knight. He planted the seed that grew into this box.

Jenya Chernoff has been the graphic designer behind the SGM scenes for 2+ decades, working on albums, posters, backdrops, photos, shirts and more

Zachary Petersen is the craftsman behind the box itself, working out the uncountable details of design, engineering, burning, cutting, etc.

Alden Knight (Odd Petals) is an artist, screen printer and bookmaker on a mission to put these empowering crafts back into the hands of the people.

Mattsen McFarland, master of the mystic arts, descends from his hermitage to explore the pedigree of our animal-headed gods.

As the vinyl record has recovered its long-held status as the way to hold music in our hands, this Tryptic enshrines our 3 founding albums in an unfolding mystery-box of burned wood, screen-printed art, and hand-made books, pulling the 20th century back into the medieval blasphemies of animal-headed objects of delirium and fetish. Feel the apocalypse in your warm and trembling hands.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum’s last album was 2024’s Of the Last Human Being.
