Xiu Xiu announce new covers compilation, share cover of Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb”
Xiu Xiu has announced a new covers compilation. The group has a history of delivering innovative takes on other people’s music, whether it’s the music of Twin Peaks or Nina Simone, and now they’re offering a set of covers of different artists ranging from Robyn to Roy Orbison. On January 6, they’ll release Xiu Mutha Fuckin’ Xiu: Vol. 1 via Polyvinyl, and the first track they’ve shared is their take on The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb,” as well as Daniel Johnston’s “Some Things Last a Long Time.” Hear it below. The band is also touring, including performances of their interpretation of David Lynch’s Eraserhead—see those below.
Jamie Stewart said in a statement, “We have a long history of doing covers and have done 3 albums of covers. The enduring and basic throughline with all of them is an attempt to say thank you to those songs. They are all in one way or another pieces of music that have moved us and exploring them in a deep way is a small honorific offering to the muse that created them. We never approach them thinking ‘How can we improve these’ but really “What can we learn from these?’”
Xiu Xiu’s last album was 2024’s 13″ Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips.
