Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings‘ new and final album, Soul of a Woman, is out today. It’s the last set of songs that Jones recorded with the band before she died last year after battling pancreatic cancer. And though the story behind the making of the album is a sad one, the album itself is soulful and joyful, a vibrant celebration that all of Jones’ album have historically been. It’s as funky as the Dap Kings have ever sounded, and features lots of big horn arrangements. And Jones, for her part, gives a stellar final performance.
“When she was strongest, that’s when we’d go into the studio,” said bass player and producer Bosco Mann in a statement about the album. “Sharon couldn’t phone it in, so we would only work when she was really feeling it.”
The album is now available to hear via major streaming platforms. Listen to the Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings Soul of a Woman stream below.
