Earlier this year, Jenny Hval released her excellent new album Classic Objects via 4AD. And today, she’s shared another new single, titled “Buffy,” inspired in part by Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Hear it below. The singer/songwriter has also shared a new video featuring live performances of Classic Objects tracks “Cemetery of Splendour” and the title track. Watch that below as well.

“Somehow I improvised some lyrics that referred to Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Hval said in a press release, “probably just because I have watched it many times. I do like the idea that a TV series with many episodes, like Buffy, can be used as a creative and political rehearsal. An episodic form rehearsing overthrowing a dictatorship, a plutocracy, or theocracy?”

She added, “Buffy is not a song about a slayer, a superhero, or feminist icon. If anything, it’s a song about hope, but in an understated and episodic way. Because to me, hope is more hopeful when it is presented in a subtle way.”

Classic Objects was featured on our list of the 33 Best Albums of 2022 So Far.
