Impulse! Records announces release of John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme: Live in Seattle
Impulse! Records has announced a newly unearthed live recording of John Coltrane performing his landmark 1965 album A Love Supreme. On October 8, the legendary jazz imprint will release A Love Supreme: Live in Seattle, which was recorded in late 1965 at The Penthouse in Seattle. The recordings belonged to the private library of a collector, and have been unheard by the public until now.
Historian Ashley Kahn says in the album’s liner notes, the album “offers the first evidence of the master of spiritual expression performing his signature work in the close confines of a jazz club…on October 2, 1965, a Saturday, in Seattle, the necessary elements were in alignment: music, players, venue, a spirit of connection, a certain political charge. Coltrane chose to perform it, and significantly, the moment was recorded.”
