Watch Shabaka Hutchings’ “Life from Isolation” Boiler Room session
Shabaka and the Ancestors last month released their outstanding set of spiritual protest jazz, We Are Sent Here by History, which we called one of the best albums of March. And like everyone else, they’re unable to perform live in front of audiences for the foreseeable future, but saxophonist and bandleader Shabaka Hutchings has been making the most of quarantine. He’s been doing regular live stream performances via his Instagram, and he also just recorded a 45-minute “Live from Isolation” Boiler Room set. Hutchings recorded the set from his home in London, and it includes solo performances from the London jazz musician on clarinet, bass clarinet and flute, and while it’s a lot different than hearing him in a live band dynamic, it’s meditative and beautiful music, and you get a strong sense of just how impressive a musician Hutchings is.
