Angel Olsen recently announced the upcoming release of Aisles, her new set of ’80s covers, out August 20 via Jagjaguwar. Olsen previously released her take on Laura Branigan’s “Gloria,” and today she’s shared another new cover, this time her take on Men Without Hats’ “Safety Dance.” It’s a somewhat darker take on the song, with a post-punk bassline and gauzy synthesizers. Hear it below.

“I felt this song could be reinterpreted to be about the time of quarantine and the fear of being around anyone or having too much fun,” Olsen says in a press release. “It made me wonder, is it safe to laugh or dance or be free of it all for just a moment?”

Aisles follows Angel Olsen’s 2020 album, Whole New Mess.

Angel Olsen’s All Mirrors and Burn Your Fire For No Witness are both featured on our list of the Top 150 Albums of the 2010s.
