Sufjan Stevens Revelation II

Sufjan Stevens is in the middle of a serial release of a new five-volume album, titled Convocations. The complete album is a 49 track, two-and-a-half-hour set of recordings to be released in its entirety on May 6 via Asthmatic Kitty. So far, Stevens has released two of those volumes, Meditations and Lamentations. The next in the series is Revelations, and today Stevens has shared a clip from it, “Revelation II.”

The collection as a whole is more in the vein of Stevens’ electronic and modern classical compositions than his indie/folk albums, and this piece is driven by vocal loops and minimalist pulses, with shades of ambient composers such as Tim Hecker and William Basinski. Hear the full track below.

Convocations follows last year’s The Ascension.

Sufjan Stevens’ “The Ascension” is featured on our list of the Top 100 Songs of 2020.
