Kevin Micka, a.k.a. Animal Hospital, releases his first new album in three years this week, Shelf Life, via Sipsman. He’s already released a handful of singles from the album, including “Awful Beast,” which we named an Essential Track. But now the album has been released two days early, ahead of its previously announced street date of November 3. The album is a rich and layered mix of dreamy instrumental elements, intricate arrangements, driving rhythms and a breathtaking tension. There’s a temptation to call it post-rock, though Micka said, “I would start with calling it a rock record.”

“A lot of my work takes a long time to come to a sense of completion,” Micka said in a press release. “It takes some effort to let go and get perspective or distance from the work in order to re-engage with it.”
