Levon Helm documentary - Ain't In it for my health

It seemed like just yesterday that the Rock Docs team was having a fireside chat about The Band and their legendary farewell concert film, The Last Waltz. Turns out that was actually several months ago, but here we are again, and Andy Keatts and David Lizerbram are revisiting one of the members of that very band, Levon Helm.

Ain’t in It for My Health: A Film About Levon Helm is a 2010 documentary directed by Jacob Hatley, and it’s a bit different than the Robbie Robertson doc, Once We Were Brothers, which was also a topic of an episode of Rock Docs. The film focuses more specifically on Helm in his later years and his struggle with cancer, as he records the final album to be released during his lifetime, 2009’s Electric Dirt, which won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Americana Album. We see Levon crack wise and offer hard-earned wisdom surrounded by family and friends (famous and obscure), undertake a short tour under challenging conditions, and work closely with guitarist/producer Larry Campbell.

This week’s guest is a returning champion of Rock Docs: Eamon O’Flynn, host of the Record Roulette Podcast. Hear the full episode below and check out the trailer for the film. Ain’t In It For My Health is available to rent on Apple TV and YouTube.
