Watch Sharp Pins’ new video for “I Can’t Stop”
Sharp Pins, the power pop project of Lifeguard‘s Kai Slater, last year released the excellent album Radio DDR digitally. And it’s fantastic—we included it on our list of 20 Great Albums You Might Have Missed from Summer/Fall 2024. Now, the album is being expanded and re-released on vinyl via K/Perennial. And today, Sharp Pins share the new video for “I Can’t Stop,” which is one of the new songs added to the album in its expanded version. The song is an infectious and bright lo-fi indie pop gem steeped in the power pop jangle of ’90s-era Guided by Voices or early ’80s Cleaners from Venus, and it comes paired with a charmingly lo-fi clip of its own, juxtaposing bedroom clips of Slater performing with stop-motion paper animation. Check it out below.
Slater said about the song in a statement, “Well the song was written and recorded in about 35 minutes cuz i had to go to band practice and just wanted to get everything down but ended up getting super tied to it, i think its kind of inspired by home-punk music like laurice or peter jeffries or cleaners from venus, more dubby + dancey, video was done in my room with a clip on lamp and some fabrics from joanne and a guitar i stole from jack in answering machines.”
