On Friday, ANOHNI and the Johnsons release new album My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross, her first since 2016’s HOPELESSNESS. It’s also our Album of the Week right now, a deeply soulful and moving piece of music. Today, ANOHNI and the Johnsons have released a new video from the album, for “Why Am I Alive Now?”, directed by Hunter Schaefer and filmed in an industrial complex overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Schaefer said in a statement, “I started listening to Anohni in high school, so it’s a huge honor to help her build a visual world for WAIAN. This music video was an honest attempt to answer the question that WAIAN begs, Why Am I Alive Now? I wanted to focus on the idea of finding sisterhood in a world that does nothing to help – I hope the direction, choreography, and tone conveys a small piece of that journey.”

On Thursday, July 6, ANOHNI will also perform live during an early album playback, along with a Q&A with Schaefer, and it will also feature special guest Nomi Ruiz. That takes place at noon Pacific, 3 p.m. Eastern, 8 p.m. British summer time at the Rebismusic Youtube channel.
