Downtown Boys, Hurray for the Riff Raff on Puerto Rico benefit compilation
Puerto Rican singer and activist Taina Asili has organized a new benefit compilation for residents of Puerto Rico who are still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Maria. The compilation is titled ¡Viva Puerto Rico! and is available to purchase now on Bandcamp. The compilation features songs by Asili, Downtown Boys, Immortal Technique, Talib Kweli, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Lila Downs, Ana Tijoux, DJ Johnny Juice (of Public Enemy), X-Vandals and many others. Proceeds from the compilation benefit the Hurricane Maria Relief & Recovery Fund, which provides support to at-risk communities affected by the hurricane. DJ Johnny Juice released a statement about the compilation: “As a member of Public Enemy, I have contributed to disaster efforts like Katrina and the earthquake in Haiti. This however is different. As a proud Boricua from the South Bronx, I have family members on the island. The spirit of my ancestors inhabit Borikén. To help rebuild the land of my people is a moral imperative. I thank Taina Asili for allowing me the honor of participating.”
