Kids, did I ever tell you the story about all the indie rock I listened to in the mid-’00s?

That’s right—this month’s episode of the Cue Sheet podcast surveys the soundtrack to How I Met Your Mother, CBS’s sitcom that ran from 2005-2014 and whose finale proved surprisingly controversial. We’re not getting in too deep about our reactions to how the series wrapped up (and whether or not the title of the show was really even entirely accurate), but we are talking about its soundtrack, which was miles ahead of your average sitcom.

The show’s protagonist is Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), a young architect in New York whose search for love finds him ending up in all sorts of comic mishaps, typically ending up with a round of beers with his friends at MacLaren’s Pub. And those comic mishaps (and moments of defeat and triumph and open-heartedness) are scored primarily by an ’00s indie rock soundtrack, which ranges from Bloc Party to A.C. Newman to Wilco, with occasional moments of original comic songwriting, such as Marshall’s (Jason Segel) funk band—The Funk, The Whole Funk and Nothing But the Funk—or Robin’s (Cobie Smulders) past pop princess persona, Robin Sparkles. We dive into the best musical moments from the show, as well as some of the too-obvious needle drops and other bits of trivia. Plus listen to our Music of How I Met Your Mother playlist below!
