At the end of 2023, Peter Gabriel released his first new album in over two decades, i/o. Now, just a little over two years later, the rock legend has announced another new album, o/i, which is something of a companion piece to the similarly named 2023 album. Much like with i/o, Gabriel will release the album in pieces—one new song in two different mixes on every full moon. For January 3’s Wolf Moon, Gabriel released the Dark-Side mix of the first song, “Been Undone.” The Bright-Side mix should follow soon. Hear it below and see the single’s artwork above, by São Paulo artist Janaina Mello.

Gabriel said in part in a statement, “The songs are a mix of thoughts and feelings.
I have been thinking about the future and how we might respond to it. We are sliding into a period of transition like no other, most likely triggered in three waves; AI, quantum computing and the brain computer interface. Artists have a role to look into the mists and, when they catch sight of something, to hold up a mirror.

“These are my lumpy bits –i/o: the inside has a new way out and o\i: the outside has a new way in.”

Gabriel hasn’t announced an official release date for the finished album, but the next full moon is due for February 1, which is when we’ll hear the next song from the record.
