Rock Docs Podcast: Interview with director Sam Jones
Rock Docs is back a little bit early this week with a bonus episode! Sam Jones is an accomplished photographer who has taken portraits of both Bob Dylan and President Barack Obama, but he’s also built up a body of work as a filmmaker that includes the Wilco documentary, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, as well as Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off. His latest is the new Jason Isbell doc, Running With Our Eyes Closed, which debuted earlier this month via HBO.
While Running With Our Eyes Closed will be revisited later on, this week Andy and David share their bonus interview with Jones, who spoke at length about a number of different topics. Among them: sharing his insights about the making of his documentaries (and one favorite “rock doc that’s not a rock doc”); getting his subjects to open up about personal things; adapting to unforeseen turns of events (like, for instance, a global pandemic); and various other things.
Listen to the interview below, and make sure to check back in next week for a new episode of Rock Docs.
