Sound City Documentary - Rock Docs Podcast

Welcome back to Rock Docs for a new year of discussions on the best (and sometimes not-best) music documentaries, their subjects, their filmmakers, and everything in between. And to get the year off on the right foot, your Rock Docs hosts—Andy Keatts and David Lizerbram—are continuing an ongoing tradition: Nick’s Picks.

For those just tuning in, Nick’s Picks is a recurring series in which friend of the pod Nick McCann makes a guest appearance on the show to talk about a documentary of his choosing. For the third installment of Nick’s Picks, it’s Sound City, the 2013 documentary about the Los Angeles recording studio directed by Foo Fighters maestro Dave Grohl. It features a bunch of big-time artists and friends and collaborators of Grohl’s, including Stevie Nicks, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Trent Reznor, Stephen Pearcy from RATT (underrated!), Rick Rubin, and—naturally—Rick Springfield. The trio also bring up an important head-scratcher of a topic: if you directed a music documentary, would it be good?

Listen to the first 2024 episode of Rock Docs below, and check out the trailer as well. The complete documentary is free to watch on YouTube (with ads).

Foo Fighters’ “Under You” is featured on our list of the Best Songs of 2023.
