Last year, indie-rock mainstays Superchunk turned 25 years old. So did Merge Records, the powerhouse of an independent record label that Superchunk frontman Mac McCaughan co-founded with bassist Laura Ballance. Yet, over all those years, McCaughan never ventured into proper solo-album territory — until now, that is. (Portastic started off in that direction, but didn’t last that way for long.) Non-Believers comes out May 4 via (you guessed it!) Merge, and features heavier new-wave and synth-pop influences than McCaughan’s previous work.
