Rock Docs Podcast: Classic Albums: Steely Dan’s ‘Aja’, with guests Alex Pappademas and Joan LeMay
Rock Docs Podcast returns this week for an episode dedicated to the Dan. Steely Dan, that is. Today, Andy Keatts and David Lizerbram dive into the 1999 Classic Albums documentary on Steely Dan’s Aja, directed by Alan Lewens. Part of the British documentary series that’s been running since 1992 and which features more than 50 installments, the Aja doc goes deep on the making of Steely Dan’s best known and best selling album (which was featured on our list of the 150 Best Albums of the 1970s!).
This week’s special guests are Alex Pappademas and Joan LeMay, the author and illustrator of Quantum Criminals: Ramblers, Wild Gamblers, and Other Sole Survivors from the Songs of Steely Dan, the excellent and visually stunning new book on Steely Dan. Alex and Joan chat with Andy and David about a whole wide range of topics in this episode, including: The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, PTSD (Post-Traumatic Steely Dan), Donald Fagen’s horrible pencil moustache, Donald and Walt’s evident glee at owning all of the publishing for the Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz hip-hop classic “Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)“, the greatness of Bernard “Pretty” Purdie and so, so much more. This is a fun one!
