The Rock Docs hosts are going solo—er, duo—on their latest episode. This week, Andy Keatts and David Lizerbram talk about Freakscene: The Story of Dinosaur Jr., a 2020 doc about legendary indie rock power trio Dinosaur Jr., directed by Philipp Reichenheim.

Early on in the movie, Dinosaur Jr.’s singer and guitarist, J Mascis, says, “I don’t know where people got this idea that it’s supposed to be fun to play music.” Their music is fun to listen to and their shows are a blast, but for a long time these guys took the whole thing very very seriously, and the strain that attitude put on their relationships is a focus of the film.

There’s a lot of lot of great music, excellent live footage, and some good talking heads (including a very weird and funny bit from the Pixies’ Frank Black). What more do you want? To have fun??

Listen to the chat below and watch the trailer for the film.

Dinosaur Jr.’s You’re Living All Over Me is featured on our list of the 150 Best Albums of the 1980s.
