Marshall Allen, bandleader of the Sun Ra Arkestra, has announced his debut solo album at the age of 100. On February 14, he’ll release New Dawn via Mexican Summer/Week-End. It’s a full-length collaboration with longtime Arkestra member Knoel Scott, and the first track Allen has shared is the title cut, which features Neneh Cherry. Hear it below.

“Knoel’s energy became the driving force behind the project,” said New Dawn producer Jan Lankisch in a statement. “He knew Marshall better than anyone, and his deep understanding of Marshall’s compositions guided the selection of material for the album.” Scott and Allen pored through an archive of unrecorded material, carefully selecting compositions that would showcase Allen’s vast musical range and ultimately presenting an intimate side of Allen rarely heard before.

Sun Ra Arkestra’s Living Sky is featured on our list of the Best Jazz Albums of 2022.

Marshall Allen New Dawn tracklist:

1. Prologue
2. African Sunset
3. New Dawn (feat. Neneh Cherry)
