Velvet Underground self-titled reissue

The Velvet Underground reissue campaign rolls on this fall with with the continuation of deluxe releases from the legendary band’s catalog. On November 24, Polydor/UMe will release a six-disc box set 45th anniversary reissue of the group’s self-titled third album, which features the original album, two discs of live material, alternate mixes, and most exciting of all, the “1969 sessions,” which comprise an unfinished and unreleased album’s worth of material from the band’s vaults. Some of the songs will be a little familiar to bands, like early version of “Andy’s Chest” from Lou Reed’s Transformer, or “Rock and Roll” from the Velvet Underground’s 1970 album Loaded. In any case, it’s a wealth of rare material to have.

There are 65 tracks included on the reissue in total. In contrast to the band’s 1968 album White Light/White Heat, The Velvet Underground was a dramatic departure from the group, turning down the noise in favor of a more meditative and quieter sound, which influenced groups like Galaxie 500 and Mazzy Star, and may have been the first true slowcore album. It was also the band’s first album after John Cale’s departure, and first to feature Doug Yule. Check out the tracklist below.
