Chrystabell and David Lynch : Cellophane Memories
Chrystabell and David Lynch are extraordinary artists as individuals—whether through their cinematic surrealist work in Twin Peaks: The Return or through their likewise fascinatingly strange sonic creations. But as musical collaborators, they deliver something profoundly intimate. Cellophane Memories is the third and latest album from the singer and filmmaker, following a 26-year friendship and creative partnership that began when they met in 1998 and took new shape with the release of their first album together 2011’s This Train. Unlike her solo albums, which involve more stylistic flourishes (e.g. rock, disco), Chrystabell’s (née Chrysta Bell Zucht) work with Lynch is more atmospheric, conveying a dreamy essence.
Minimalism is at the heart of Cellophane Memories, though the album predominantly features the Texas-born artist’s vocals as well as guitar, electronic drones, and strings arranged by Lynch and his late longtime collaborator Angelo Badalmenti. In the hands of Bell and Lynch, their minimalist take allows for tremendous feeling and atmosphere. Take “She Knew” for example: the song opens with a swelling drone and Bell’s voice, except almost immediately, another vocal line from Bell emerges. Each permutation of her voice takes turns and intermingles with one another against the sound of the drones, the track blossoming as its few sonic elements at work create something that subtly grows more massive.
This chemistry is present throughout every song on the record. In Lynch’s instrumental construction and Bell’s vocal harmonies, each track makes for an oddly comforting psychedelic experience. Between the lyrics and instrumentation, the ambiance throughout Cellophane Memories strikes a perfect balance: never forcing an image onto the listener but allowing them to make their own discoveries. While most of the songs provide serene atmospheric tones, there are some surprises, such as the chilling “Reflections in a Blade,” which sounds like it would fit into a horror movie.
Cellophane Memories is perfect backdrop for meditation or even playing as one is about to slip away into their own dreamland. It’s a lovely experience that only serves to emphasize what Chrystabell and Lynch are capable of creating together.
